Quick Picks: January 2013

Since it's a rare occasion that I have time to write a full blog post, I'll be instating a new way of showing what games are playable on a netbook. I'll select a few games from a particular month and use an Excel table for each game, like I've done in the "What you'll need" section of regular featured game posts. Today's quick picks were all released in the first month of this year.

Fieldrunners 2:

Strike Suit Zero:
The (in my opinion) spectacular graphics are too much for even the fastest Kabini GPU.

The Cave:

Ace Combat: Assault Horizon (Enhanced Edition):
Too graphically demanding.

DmC Devil May Cry:
Both the CPU and GPU will struggle in this game. Not recommended with currently available hardware.

Dungeonland:

Skulls of the Shogun:

Wizardry Online:
This game has high memory bandwidth requirements, and it's not hard to see why; the game uses excessive bloom and motion blur.

Antichamber:

Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed:

  1. Hi.
Can you post a guide, how to change platform on netbook? Because I can´t find any netbook with Temash or Kabini with 10" screen:-(

    1. You can't change a netbook's platform. Nearly all netbooks have the CPU, chipset, and graphics, the components that make up the platform, soldered onto the motherboard and thus can't be replaced. That said, Asus will be releasing a 10 inch Temash dual-core Vivobook soon, so be on the lookout for it.

  2. Well, there isn´t any Kabini 10" or 11,6" netbooks, there is only 15" laptops.

The problem is, i don´t think anything below Kabini with Quad Core CPU and Dual Channel RAM will play games, that I want play (Firefall and FPS Creator Reloaded)

    1. You're right about needing a quad core for Firefall. Any dual core ultramobile part from either Intel or AMD just isn't fast enough. You don't need dual-channel RAM, but you do need a GPU clocked at a minimum of 550 MHz with a memory controller that supports DDR3/1333 or faster. That means the A6-5200 is the only good option unless you're willing to overclock the GPU on an A4-5000. Finding a 11.6" netbook with the A6-5200 is like finding a purple needle in a stack of blue needles. I hate to say it, but getting a good experience with Firefall & FPS Creator on today's netbooks is probably not going to happen.
